Production automation: how Odoo ERP system turns chaos into a controlled process

Production planning (MRP) is the basis around which the entire production loop in Odoo is built

The Manufacturing module with MRP (Material Requirements Planning) support works with three entities:

What does this mean in practice? the manager no longer asks «do you have the materials?», the system itself shows whether the order can be fulfilled on time and what needs to be purchased.

Quality control module

The Quality module allows you to build control points directly into the production route. Before proceeding to the next operation, the operator passes a checklist, fills out a checklist, measures a parameter, or records the test result.

This is a fundamental difference from the classical scheme, where quality is checked only at the output. Detecting a problem where it occurs, rather than after the batch has already been produced, reduces the cost of rework or write-offs.

The system also supports nonconformity management (NCR) and corrective actions (CAPA), which is critical for ISO-certified enterprises.

Equipment management and downtime prevention module

Unplanned equipment downtime is one of the most costly risks in production. The Maintenance module solves this in two ways:

  • Reactive service - repair requests after a breakdown, with automatic assignment of a responsible engineer.
  • Preventive maintenance - scheduled maintenance according to the schedule or operating time.

Each piece of equipment has a passport in the system: technical specifications, a request log, and downtime statistics. Integration with the production module allows you to see in real time how equipment downtime affects the fulfillment of a particular order and adjust the schedule.

PLM: controlling changes in design documentation

In production facilities where the product is constantly being improved, a separate problem arises: how to make changes to BoM and routes in a controlled manner without disrupting current production orders?

The PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) module solves this through Engineering Change Orders (ECO). Any change to the specification goes through an approval process, and only after approval is the new BoM version activated in production. Versioning of specifications allows you to always know which version of the BoM was used for a particular batch - which is critical in case of complaints or audits.

Warehouse, procurement and barcoding in a single chain

Automation of the production process does not exist in a vacuum - it is inextricably linked to warehousing and procurement:

  • Inventory - management of stocks, movements, warehouse zoning
  • Purchase - automatic generation of requests and orders to suppliers based on MRP signals
  • Barcode - operators perform warehouse operations and record production steps through scanning, without manual input

As a result, you get up-to-date data in real time without manual input errors. But the most common mistake when implementing Odoo in production is transferring old processes to a new system without rethinking them. The system starts collecting data but doesn't help you make decisions. This is the difference between an ERP that manages production and an ERP that only records facts.

  1. The system does not replace a bad process, it speeds it up.
    The most common mistake when implementing ERP in manufacturing is transferring old processes to a new system without rethinking them.
